Online Canadian Citizenship Test: Complete Rules, Webcam Requirements & Checklist
Step-by-step guide to taking the official IRCC citizenship test online, including ID verification, webcam rules, and technical tips.
Taking the Canadian Citizenship Test Online
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) conducts the majority of citizenship tests via an online testing platform. While taking the test from home offers great convenience, strict security protocols are enforced to ensure academic integrity.
1. Technical Requirements Before You Begin
To successfully run the online test, ensure your equipment meets IRCC standards:
- Device: A desktop computer, laptop, or tablet with a working keyboard. Mobile phones are not permitted.
- Webcam: A working built-in or external webcam capable of capturing clear images of your face and ID documents.
- Supported Browser: The latest version of Google Chrome or Safari on desktop operating systems (Windows or macOS).
- Internet Connection: A stable, high-speed connection. Avoid unreliable public Wi-Fi networks.
2. The Identification Verification Process
When you start your test session, you will be prompted to:
- Hold your Permanent Resident (PR) card or Confirmation of Permanent Residence up to the webcam to take a clear photo.
- Take a clear, well-lit photo of your face directly facing the camera with a neutral expression.
- Enter your Application Number and Unique Client Identifier (UCI) exactly as they appear on your invitation letter.
3. Strict Rules During the 45-Minute Exam
During the exam, the system takes automated webcam photos at periodic intervals. Violating testing rules can result in test voidance and an investigation. Remember:
- Test Alone: You must be in a private room by yourself. No other people or pets may enter the room.
- No Headphones or Earbuds: Your ears must remain visible to the camera at all times.
- No External Materials: No notes, books, Discover Canada guides, or open browser tabs are permitted.
- Remain in Camera View: Do not leave your seat, lean out of camera view, or cover the webcam lens until you submit your test.
4. Test Day Checklist
Quick Checklist:
• Quiet room with door closed • Valid PR card on desk • Glass of water • Computer plugged into power charger • Browser extensions and notifications turned off.
5. Score Results and Processing Times
Upon submitting the 20th question, your provisional score appears immediately on the screen. An IRCC officer will review the webcam photos within several weeks before officially marking your test status as "Completed" in the citizenship tracker.
